World Champion The Validator Validates

In 2005, Lance Miller won the World Champion of Public Speaking with his speech, titled, The Validator.

The concept flows thru the universe.
Here is a short story based on the concept.

ABZ question:
Are you a validator?
Have you validated those who are closest to you? Like a family member and people you work with?
Are you willing to be a validator, at least once?

Get Ticket for Col. Jill, Dec 3

Colonel Jill Morgenthaler Speaks on Leadership Tips

Do you have a stereotype image of a US Army Colonel? A lady Colonel, especially?

Come and meet Ret. Col. Jill, a funny, charming and witty keynote speaker, on Saturday, Dec 3, 2011. This is part of the Skinless Project, featuring the Power Night. General admission is $15. Students $10. Free admission for veterans with ID.

An evening with Col. Jill Morgenthaler, with storytelling, war stories, laughter and leadership tips. Fun and “Ah ha!” moments.

As one of the first women to train as an equal with men in combat situations, the Colonel taps her unique experiences to help us soar and not stagnate.  As a gifted storyteller, she takes us with her to boot camp, to Bosnia, and to her famous face-off with Saddam Hussein, so each of us discovers better ways to be better leaders.

Many of us have a stereotypical idea of what a decorated war hero and Colonel is.  What we don't imagine is Colonel Jill Morgenthaler.   She is a complex woman who is a war hero, raised a family, has been the top executive for homeland security in Illinois, ran for US Congress and has spent her life saving lives.  When you meet the Colonel, you will be struck by her strength, femininity, confidence and compassion.

Flip Flip Again

Flip_video_store

Half price for a neat handy camcord.

Earlier this year, Cisco purchased Flip to retire this popular video camera.

Not sure if they slash the price to clear the inventory or it's a new marketing strategy. Perhaps due to popular demands. In any event, this device is a one-task-master.

ABZ question:
Have you Flipped yourself lately? Do you know how you present to the rest of the world? Flip and find out.

GTD Best Friend Shortcuts to Digital Chaos Monster - new App LifeTopix

No more digital monster. If you have iPhone and/or iPad, this app will slice your digital dragon.

You will gain control of your precious data and entries, in ways that makes sense to you. You will short cut your orgainzing effort. You will have the past, present and the future in your hands, both figuratively and literally speaking.

If this app lives up to it's promises, this will be the best thing ever since the first PDA. This just might be the GTDer's best friend. If the company keeps up, they will be hailed as the ultimate savior for our digital chaos.

"What is the fuzz and buzz?" you ask.

Connecting your digital life: iCal, contacts, appointments and notes, etc. etc. etc. I have been search long and hard for something like this ever since OSX was born. FileMakerPro is a monster in itself, let along making use of it to maneuver the digital maze.

Once upon a time, there was a Change Lab who wrote an exceptional program named, CAT, Contact Activity Time, for the mac. It connects all the essential information and allowed the user to pull up the data at any one of those options. It was ahead of its time.

Unfortunately, they gave up when they faced the wall of OSX. I missed that application so much. I sincerly hope this LifeTopix will revive the spirit of connecting our digital data dots.

The real test is in the crowd. With the reduced price for the Labor Day weekend, it's really worth a try.

If there are enough people buy and try, this will survive. Then, there is hope to end our digital chaos.

P.S. I have no afflication with the company, LightArrow.com. I just saw that they are diligent in replying the suggestions and applying themselves.

Three Keys to Creativity

Three keys to Creativity?

* Ability - It's our natural ability. All around us everywhere, like air and water. Kids have an abundance. Adults are learning to re-cultivate.

* Belief - willing to let go of old beliefs, accept new and explore possibilities

* Channel - Capture, direct the ability and apply it concisely.

It's best describe by the ancient concept of Yin and Yang. You will have a better understanding at a hands-on workshop. There are many attempts to explain the concept and theory. Until you experience it, they are just words.

For more info, Creative Education Foundation.

Best books on Creativity
Here are three on the top of a long list of books on Creativity. Google and Amazon give you a lot more.

Six Thinking Hats by Edward de Bono, is regarded as the basic.
The Artist Way by Julia Cameron, is a classic.
Think Better by Tim Hurson, is a more recent business book.

ZIP-See ZIP-Saw Story

Screen_shot_2011-06-08_at_3

ZIP-See is how you pronounce the acronym CPSI, stands for Creative Problem Solving Institute. The parent organization is CEF,
CreativeEducationFoundation.org

My ZIP-See(CPSI) Story -

I was born in China where girls are not valued most of the time.

To prove that I have some value to offer, I become a mechanical engineer. My Daddy worked very hard to distill in my head that engineers are logical, analytical and rational. I think I am pretty good at problem solving, mathematically speaking. However, I never thought of myself being creative. Actually, I was not allowed to do any creative activities growing up.

Then I became a professional artist who combined art and science, revived an ancient art and coined the term, Painting On Water(TM). Most people tell me that's creative and innovative.

When my friend Gregg told me about CPSI 15 years ago, I was not interested.

I am not crafty, I am not artsy. My body of art work was a serious endevor that was made possible thru my scientific research experience. I never thought I belong to a community of creativity, until CPSI was held in my hometown, Chicago, in 2006. It was at my backyard so I stopped by.

Then the rest is history. I have been attending CPSI ever since.

I met people with like mind, carry a certain level of curiosity and yet smart enough to suspend their judgment. Ha, that's when I learned the lesson of holding back the judgment and practice failing fabulously in the safe zone.

Although I had read a number of books previously, I stepped into an environment of living and breathing creativity. Crafty and artistry are only a sub-set. There are a lot more substance to the art and science of creativity.

Being creative is a state of mind. It contains a set of skills that can be taught and learned. It's a way of thinking. Creativity is like the air around us. It could be gathered and powered to become forceful wind in the wind tunnel. Or it could be soft as a gentle breeze that beings a smile to our face. It depends on how one makes use of it. Even if you never pay any attention to it, still AIR still there.

Back to the Zip-See and the Zip-Saw story.

The first conference I attended gave me the language to articulate and communicate about Creative Problem Solving, CPS. It's like knowing the algebra and calculus. The more the vocabularies you have, the more precision you could think and express.

Since the community is very good with sharing, I shared my process of Painting on Water™ in 2007. It was well received. Soon, with Mario's encouragement, I developed it to be an experiential tool to help others to learn. I joined the open source movement.

Bottom line: To think different, Do something different, for a change. Attendees found it to be a meaningful process that access both their right brain and left brain simultaneously.

Since then, I developed several courses on leadership, team building and CPS based on Painting on Water™ as a learning process. I took it from an art demonstration to become a learning tool. The feedback has been phenomenal. To read a few samples, click here.

On Tue, June 21 from 4 - 5:30 I will present at Session 210
Painting On Water™ - The ABC of Creativity Flow

Tomorrow, I will post "From ZIP-See to DIP-See."

Looking back, I am grateful that Gregg Fraley told me about ZIP-See (CPSI). Glad that the CEF Board decided to hold the conference in Chicago. It was Marios Michaelides who pointed out the benefits . A big thank you to all the CPSIers who attended my sessions thru the years, spreaded the words and proved that there are benefits to the business world.

ABZee Tips: Register and attend ZIP-See (CPSIConference.org) from June 20 - 24 in Atlanta and find out your own ZIP-Saw.

Below is a media release from CPSI for the 2011 confernece.

Creative Problem Solving Institute

Opens Early Registration Now Through May 15

Largest and Longest-Running Creativity and Innovation “How-To” Conference to Be Held June 20-24 in Atlanta

BOSTON, April 20, 2011 – The 57th annual Creative Problem Solving Institute (CPSI), thelargest and longest-running creativity and innovation “how-to” conference in the country, announced the opening of early registration now through May 15. The in-demand event, which draws people from around the world to develop creative and innovative skills, will be held June 20-24, 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia. Early registration, with a discounted conference rate, is available online atwww.cpsiconference.com.

“This is a conference of deep, hands-on learning on how to be creative and apply research-based creativity to approach and solve everyday challenges,” shared Kate Busch Gervais, director of programs at Creative Education Foundation. “With our current business and economic challenges, many experts agree that infusing creativity into many levels in our organizations can create powerful solutions.”

The 5-day conference is similar to an immersive college-style short course allowing for a truly tailored conference experience. With three main tracks focused on basic, advanced, and in-depth creative skills development, attendees then have an option of additional shorter programs to enhance their experience. Last year, more than 400 people from more than 150 companies, nonprofits and government agencies attended the annual event. In addition to the early registration discount offered now through May 15, government, nonprofit, group, business, and student conference rates are available as well.

More than 80 speakers, trainers and keynote speakers, each with established expertise and credentials, will be teaching at CPSI this year. Leading a Pre-Conference workshop on June 19 is Amy Basic, presenting a unique program, Painting on Water TM. An engineer and an artist by training, Ms. Basic engages participants’ creativity in new ways. Also presenting is Dave Gray, the author of the best-seller “Gamestorming” – presenting one of his few public workshops in the U.S. this year. In addition, David Magellan Horth and Dan Buckner will present “Innovation Leadership,” a program to help leaders foster a creative culture and build upon their human capital. Artist and engineer Amy Basic will present “Painting on Water” a new method of creative processing .

A full list of speakers and trainers is available at www.cpsiconference.com/presenters.cfm." target="_blank">http:// www.cpsiconference.com/presenters.cfm.

The city of Atlanta will serve as the host for the 2011 and 2012 CPSI conferences. “We chose Atlanta [as our host city] because it’s a hotbed of creativity and innovation – from the academic, entertainment, business and social spheres,” added Gervais. Previously, the conference has been hosted in Chicago, Boston, and St. Paul, MN among other cities.

About CPSI

CPSI is an annual conference focused on three main areas - Creativity, Innovation and Change Leadership - hosted by the Creative Education Foundation. Founded in 1954, the conference is the single largest creative immersive learning experience focused on individual skills and abilities. In its first 56 years, more than 30,000 people have learned how to become more creative through research-based training and applied skills development. CPSI was the brain child of Alex Osborn, the inventor of brainstorming and Creative Problem Solving, the founder of Creative Education Foundation, and more commonly known as the cofounder of advertising firm BBDO. More information, including registration, can be found online at www.cpsiconference.com.

Editors’ Notes:

Hi everyone!

Really excited that our Creativity in Business Conference is coming together with some really awesomely diverse and amazing presenters and panelists! And lots more to come - over the next few weeks we will be adding more and more to the site

. Special Dive-In discount through June 5 - details below. You can stay updated on the the new Facebook Page.
Other news: really enjoyed co-facilitating the Revolutionizing the World of Work event in DC May 12-13. Along similar "new paradigm" theme, I am excited to be co-facilitating an event called The Gathering To Build a Better Future in Melbourne, Australia in June. Love the mission! This past weekend, I had  fun presenting Nonverbal Creativity for Sensing and Sense-Making session at Win Wenger's Learning and Creativity DoubleFest in Pasadena, MD. Also honored to be on this list of "Inspiring Change Agents I met on Twitter" on the Emergent By Design blog: http://bit.ly/iWBvBX.

Just FYI, from June 4 - June 21, I will be in Australia - for some work and some play - and rarely checking emails. Unless it's an emergency, I plan to return emails and calls upon my return into the office on June 22.

Have a happy, lively and safe holiday weekend!

Warmly,

Pre-earlybird Dive-in Discount! A chance to save $100 off the regular rate ($50 off earlybird rate) through midnight June 5 for pioneers and brave souls who enter into the unknown and dive in while the program is still being created. You can see the emerging cast of characters here and emerging schedule at here. More to come!

Our sincere hope is that you learn a lot, think new ideas, see with new eyes, have relevant and worthwhile take-aways, meet kindred spirits, make plentiful and generative connections and collaborations, feel safe enough to creatively open up...and challenged enough to move out of your comfort zone, leave with practical ideas and applications, solve problems, create visions, tap into your creative uniqueness and aliveness, are inspired toward positive change in your work and life, are more confident as a creator who has the capacity to influence your business or work environment, cultivate your own a-has, are more in touch with your passion, calling or creative spark, and have FUN doing it!...any or all of the above...and then some... :-)

Feeling adventurous?

 77 Awesome Creativity Books

Apparently people really like lists. My most re-posted blog post is just a list - albeit one with links to each book. It's a list of books - some classics and some newer ones - that either informed my journey or otherwise resonated with me over the past 2 decades. My only criteria was that I had read it, liked it, and could feel good about recommending it. Feel free to add other suggestions.

Revolutionizing the World of Work

We had a great 2-day event (organized by Steve Denning and Seth Kahan) with more to come! It really seemed to hit a generative place in participants. You can read Seth's
article about the event on Fast Company online and Rod Collins' post on his blog.

Liberating Creativity

Short blog post in going underneath business buzz words (which someone had accurately pointed out that 'buzz word' is a buzz word in itself
) to liberate creativity...going beyond the habitual into deeper meaning and context.

CreativiTweet Musings

Every issue I also include some of my musings in 140 characters or less. These are some of my recently tweeted thoughts about creativity and emergence.

1. When inspired, passionate people meet, they share their stories - not their job description - as a way of contextualizing their work

2. Designing for and facilitating creativity means designing for surprise...theirs and yours

3. I think Creativity Manifestos come to life with accompanying experiential practices, in order to become ingrained and embodied

4. The difference between 'woo-woo' and creativity practices that transform is in the foundations: principles, meaning, intention

5. Conventional: think and talk about it. New paradigm: that...plus experience, embodiment and engaging the whole brain

6. Creativity tapped in a system, by its nature, creates structure change - we can't "get creative" and expect same type of containment in the system

7. Systems are not meant to stay static...they are meant to be engaged in dynamic co-creation 8. Ask, "What do you do?" and the energy is flat. Ask, "What is your story?" and the energy becomes alive

9. I believe at the core every soul wants to create, contribute, love and be loved
10.
Creativity can transform disjointed chaos into purposeful aliveness
11.
In a static world, conflicting truths fight. In a creative world, conflicting truths dance
12. The initial novel thoughts out of the gate are mostly messy and unpolished. Don't judge them...engage them into being first
